Course Summary

This RACGP CPD approved for 13 hours, ACM, ACRRM, ACWA, and CPD/PDP accredited course consists of five modules and a bonus Aspirations, Hopes and Ambitions (AHA) masterclass. Each module is detailed and has accompanying resources and worksheets, one day per module should be allocated. Our suggested time frame is 13 hours for the online course and an additional day for the bonus masterclass. As the course is completely pre-recorded you can work through it during times that suit you.

There are assessments in each module and a post-course evaluation that is needed for some accreditations.

This activity will inform participants on specific knowledge and skills relating to cultural, ecological and anthropic principles that support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander early life-interventions, in particular:

  1. Impact of out-of-home care
  2. Maternal nutrition
  3. The neuroscience of infants
  4. Understanding the lifelong impacts of early childhood experiences
  5. Importance of kinship and other relationships, conception and extended concept of family
  6. Epigenetics
  7. Infant learning capacities (much earlier than predicted)
  8. Building capabilities for parents in vulnerable families (adolescence)
  9. Developing executive functioning and self-regulation skills in children
  10. Building cultural security in engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families
  11. Group pregnancy care
  12. Interventions during pregnancy and up to two years for parents experiencing complex trauma.
  13. Improving parenting capacity for socio-emotional wellbeing to reduce the stressors and provide information about social and cultural determinants that will help protect them
  14.  Addressing racism, cross-cultural learnings that focus on building rapport, understanding content and background, suspending judgment and working in partnership
  15. Inclusion of men and what does fathering look like from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective, including how to increase their role in family care

Kerry Arabena

Professor Kerry Arabena 

A descendant of the Meriam people from the Torres Strait, Kerry’s work has brought her to the forefront of Indigenous affairs in Australia. A former social worker with a Doctorate in Environmental Science, Kerry has held senior positions including Chair of Indigenous Health at the University of Melbourne, Executive Director of First 1000 Days Australia, CEO of the Lowitja Institute, and Director of Indigenous Health Research at Monash University. Kerry is the former President of Ecohealth International, a Scientific Commissioner with The Lancet Pathfinder project and a Director of IgNITE.

With an extensive background in public health, administration, community development and research, Kerry has led a wide range of organisations and committees including the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Equality Council and the National Congress of Australia’s First People. Currently a Director of Kinaway Chamber of Commerce, Kerry holds an honorary professorial position with the University of Melbourne and has a number of entrepreneurial programs in development.
